How to make a stuffed crust pizza from scratch

by Marshall Brain

My kids first learned about stuffed crust pizza at Pizza Hut. They love the idea of cheese in the crust. Then we discovered DiGiorno frozen Stuffed Crust pizzas.

But what if you want to make your own stuffed crust pizzas at home. The hardest part is getting the crust right. You have three options:

  • Buy raw pizza dough at a place like Domino's or Papa Johns. Usually they will sell it to you if you ask.
  • Use the refrigerated pizza dough you can find in the refrigerated biscuit section at the grocery store
  • Make the dough from scratch
Here's a typical pizza dough recipe - there are dozens of them on YouTube:

He uses:

  • two teaspoons of yeast
  • two teaspoons of sugar (you can use as little as half a teaspoon if you like)
  • a cup of water
  • four cups of flour
  • teaspoon of salt
  • quarter cup of olive oil
  • Another cup of water
Mix and then kneed it. If it is too wet, add flour. Let it rise once for an hour or two and then it is ready to use. Here is another recipe that uses cold water instead of warm and keeps it refrigerated overnight.

Do you want to toss your pizza dough in the air? This video shows you how.

Now that you have your dough, how do you stuff stuff the crust? This video suggests using string cheese:

If you don't like (or have) string cheese, you can use shredded mozzarella instead and seal it in the crust.
